Sakai Kokodo is a wonderful antique gallery located on Yokohama’s “Golden Half-Mile,” Motomachi. Motomachi was the area where the first European and American families living in Yokohama were forced to settle. They established businesses along Motomachi and built many of their homes on the Bluff above.

Sakai Kokodo deals mainly in imported European and American antique furnishings. The shop’s location in Yokohama’s original foreign settlement lends an air of authenticity to the antiques and gives shoppers a sense that perhaps many of the antique items are from families of the original settlement. In addition to antique furniture, Sakai Kokodo carries Meiji-era lamps and lampshades, and a large assortment of china, porcelain, and crystal.

Original bags with a bold yet tasteful ‘K’ emblazoned on the front are Kitamura’s trademark. Be prepared to walk out with your bag a little lighter as prices are high for some crocodile goods. At any moment the surprisingly large number of staff may outnumber the customers, and they are quite helpful.

With a total floor space of 184,940 square meters, including 75,000 sq. m. of sales floor, Yokohama Sogo is the world’s largest department store. It stocks just about everything you could possibly ever wish to buy. For example, the food market, which is on level B1, is enormous and offers groceries from just about every country on earth. Even if you do not intend to buy anything it is worth visiting this area just to see what other people eat.

On the same level, there are dozens of stalls selling prepared meals, from the simple rice ball to top of the line French or Chinese delicacies. And there is also a large wine cellar and well-stocked liquor store. As you might expect, you are not short of options in other departments either. You can find most of the world’s top brands in just about any category: clothes, jewelry, cosmetics, tableware, furniture, etc. The sixth floor houses the Sogo Museum of Art, which holds exhibitions of local and international artists. The Hiraki Bijutsukan is on the same floor and this gallery displays ukiyoe, or Japanese Woodblock Prints.

Like its sister pubs in Tokyo, The Tavern pub serves good, traditional pub food and a variety of English and Irish draft or bottled ales and beers to help it down. It has a cozy, British atmosphere, even when it is crowded. There is an extensive menu of British delights to choose from. Fish & chips, probably the best in town, cost JPY1,200. Add a portion of mushy peas for an extra JPY200. Shepherd’s pie and Cornish pasty also cost JPY1,200, and roast beef and Yorkshire pudding costs JPY1,500. Draft Guinness costs JPY950 a pint and Bass JPY800. There is also an Austrian beer, Gosser, on draft at JPY800. Bottled Newcastle Brown Ale costs JPY850.

For a big juicy steak and a salad bar loaded with fresh fruit and vegetables, this is the place. Part of the American chain of steak houses, Sizzler differs very little from its American counterparts. The decor is typical of family-style restaurants, although without the forced cheerfulness and bad music. Sizzler has a little something for the meat lover in us all. They serve steaks, seafood, and herbed chicken. Most plates cost under JPY2,000. The all you can eat salad bar is only JPY1,400 before 3pm, and goes up to JPY1,800 in the evening hours. If you would like some red meat and are tired of yakiniku, Sizzler offers a nice homestyle alternative.
